I lowered my hat as I walked towards the Alley way. It was evening now on a cool autumn night. The breeze was chilling and licked at my face leaving a dry burn across my skin. The baseball cap gave little protection. I glanced around at my surroundings, a cross roads. Left and right, street way, lined with trees and sidewalk. Ahead, the darkest alley I had seen. Two large crumbling brick buildings stood on either side, a former model of their creator's vision, now decaying. I kicked at some fallen debris as I glowered closer to the opening of darkness. I had done this a million times before but I could still feel the adrenaline creeping up my spine. With a final glance over my shoulder I shook off my backpack and dropped it in front of my feet. I quickly pulled the zipper down and dug around inside.

My backpack is an odd device. It houses the soul of a water spirit. About a year ago the company I work for tried to make what I can roughly call a ghost vacuum. I'm not good with the scientific terminology but that's what I called it. It was meant to capture specters and demons so that one could bring them back for further study and evaluation. My mission was to capture a water spirit and bring it back for these exact reasons. Instead I almost drowned, purged two spirits, and saved one. The one I saved lives in a hammer space sort of void that is the inside of my back pack. Whenever I need anything from inside he usually helps me find it. In return I take care of him.

I pulled my hand out and it was covered in saltwater. The spirit didn't answer my desperate grabs today and I really didn't want to jump in and wake him up. I reasoned to do things the old fashioned way, instead, and reached in my windbreaker's pocket for my cell phone. I typed a number into its QWERTY keyboard then shifted it into a simple flip phone. I loved it's faded red color, a symbol of the years I've had it. I didn't have long to reminisce, though, as I closed it and a hologram red katana blade came out of its other end. The blade is made of pure energy and will cut through any creature of the spirit realm. See the company I work for combines technology with magic. Our goal is to rid the world of invading wickedness. We are few in number but strong in intellect and will. I used my blade to cut straight through the darkness of the alley, releasing a matrix of data that came in the form of a scream. I pulled my back pack on and jumped into the split between worlds.
This is a very short piece that I’m pulling from a story of mine called Technologically Advanced (T.A.) I felt it was appropriate for the virtual writing prompt seeing as how the overall story deals with a lot of technology on the main characters part, though it may not show through here as much. Very quick to write, please forgive errors OTL

Again sorry for my lateness in submission, I have a lot irl going on right now but I will do my best to keep active in this group!

And sorry for the lateness of my comment. When I was reading this at first, I wasn't sure if this was for the virtual prompt or the ghost one. It kind of fills both qualifications. This left me with a lot of questions. It is an interesting story setting and would certainly checkout a more complete short story or chapter. This felt more like a trailer or the hook you read on the back of a book. If that was the intention, then the 'more questions than answers' quality is right on. I would like to know what you meant by a matrix of data in the form of a scream. I have ideas and theories, but would love a definite answer. The world he is jumping into, is that the spirit world? Are the spirits partially digital? Or is the real world incorporating virtual elements like how he pulled the Katana out. I hope you take part in the next prompt too, look forward to seeing what you write next.
